The arrival of the Intelligence and Security Services Act 2017, known as WIV in Dutch and referred to informally as the dragnet law, caused quite a commotion in the first half of this year. Nearly everyone had an opinion about it, but only a handful proved capable of separating fact from fiction, as became apparent from the WIV fact checker provided by Fox-IT.
On a dedicated website, until the referendum on 21 March, visitors could take a quiz to say whether six statements were correct or incorrect. Over 8,000 people visited the website, and nearly 3,700 completed the whole quiz. Only 10% of them turned out to be able to answer all the questions correctly. Fox-IT released the fact checker to inform voters about the technical side of the ‘dragnet law’.
