You have to be special to work for this company

Sander Peters, an IT security analyst, first encountered Fox-IT while working on a graduation project at the company, as part of his Information Studies program in Rotterdam. His project (on consulting public sources) made such an impact that he is now an indispensable part of the Managed Security Services business unit.

“You have to be special to work for this company. Candidates must already have an extensive knowledge of their subject. I wanted to focus purely on the field of security, so I immediately felt right at home at Fox-IT. As a result, there are work-related activities outside normal office hours. At home, we can regularly be found reading professional journals and discovering new things. From time to time, I am surprised by how little thought some companies give to security matters. If you fail to safeguard vital information, then you are essentially putting it up for grabs and leaving yourself open to people whose motives are less than pure.

The nice thing about my job and our department is that you get a helicopter view of events. Our business unit is responsible for our clients’ continuous monitoring processes. Are people complying with the internal mail policy? Are there any leaks in the security system? Sensors detect any blips on the hardware in a range of networks and analyze all current data traffic. Incidents are classified and, where necessary, reported to the client. We always record exactly what happened, where and when, and give an indication of the possible repercussions. Our service must be accessible at any time. That includes the night-time hours and the weekends.

Curiosity is an important characteristic for someone in his line of work. "You need real drive if you want to work in the security field, you might even call it a quirk. IT security is similar to top-level sport. There are many young people on our staff, which means that we often have the same views about things. Fox-IT is a major think-tank, constantly generating ideas. That keeps you on your toes. I like the fact that everyone here is given personal supervision. You are not just a number here. Everyone genuinely wants to help you develop your career. You can help out anywhere, as needed, and even develop your own initiatives."
