Fox DataDiode receives common criteria EAL7+

Fox DataDiode has received the highest level security certification with common criteria, EAL7+.

Key Facts:

  • Fox DataDiode is the first and only European product to achieve Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 15408) EAL7+ certification and is approved for secure network connections up to and including NATO Secret and is worldwide the highest evaluated product ever.
  • Fox-IT specializes in cyber security and digital forensics products and services that protect state secret systems, SCADA critical infrastructure and other highly sensitive systems.
  • Fox DataDiode ensures one-way transmission between IT networks and physically prevents data from a high-security network from leaking to another network.

Delft, The Netherlands—June 16, 2010—Fox-IT announced today that its Fox DataDiode for secure, one-way data transmission between networks is the first European product to achieve Common Criteria EAL7+ certification—the highest  Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level.

Fox DataDiode provides one-way transmission for safely connecting networks with different security levels. It physically prevents data leakage from a high-security network and thereby enables real-time data transfers from another network as opposed to manual “air gap” transfers.  It eliminates the critical information access delays and risks of human error or malicious intent associated with manual data transfers using CDs or USB memory sticks.  Fox DataDiode ensures the confidentiality mandated for government networks, and preserves the availability and integrity of SCADA networks as well.

Fox DataDiode was already Common Criteria EAL4+ certified and approved for network connections up to and including NATO secret. It is now the first and only European product to be EAL7+ certified under the newer Common Criteria version 3 requirements, which involve more rigorous testing. Certification was performed in Europe by Brightsight in conjunction with the Dutch NLNCSA.

“Fox DataDiode is now the most tested and security-validated product of its kind,” said Paul Bakker, CTO of Fox-IT’s crypto unit. “CC EAL7 certification further assures users that our technology for safely connecting high-security networks is the finest in the world. It not only has applications for government cyber security and lawful interception solutions, but increasingly for SCADA networks in critical infrastructure industries like energy and banking where similar security standards are needed.”

Common Criteria or CC is an international standard (ISO/IEC 15408) for IT security certification that is recognized by governments in more than 26 countries, including the United States.  Evaluation Assurance Level 7 (EAL7) applies to products for extremely high-risk environments.  Certification is granted when a CC testing laboratory confirms that a product successfully meets or exceeds (“+”) specified evaluation targets. EAL7 certification involves the most detailed examination of product functionality, development environment, documentation, product testing and supply chain security.
