Fox DataDiode CC EAL7+ certification pending

March 17, 2010 – Today Fox-IT announced that the hardware component of the Fox DataDiode will be enrolling in the process to earn the highest Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 7+ (CC EAL7+). The evaluation will be carried out by Brightsight in combination with the Dutch NLSCSA. The expected date to receive the certification will be in Q3 2010. Until now there are no other European products to hold this certification.

Common Criteria is an international independent security certification recognized by governments in more than 26 countries, including the United States. Certification is granted when a Common Criteria testing laboratory determines that a product meets a defined measure of security. The certification addresses product functionality, development environment, documentation and product testing measures.

“The CC EAL7+ certification is the highest security standard a product can be tested to in regards to the Common Criteria. Until now all EAL7+ products have been evaluated by the older Common Criteria 2.x version. The Fort Fox Hardware Data Diode product will be one of the first to be evaluated by the new 3.x version”, said Bartek Gedrojc, Product manager for the Fox DataDiode.

The Fox DataDiode is a product that connects two networks while enforcing one way traffic. This allows for connecting networks with different security levels. It is ideally suited for making e.g. unclassified data available in a secret network while it is physically impossible for the secret data to leak from the network. Alternatively the Fox DataDiode can be found in automation (e.g. SCADA) environments, where it is typically used to protect the vital process control systems by only allowing e.g. historical data to leave the network, whilst ensuring its integrity and availability.

About Common Criteria
The Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluations, also known as ISO standard 15408, was developed by the national security organizations of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and The Netherlands. It provides a broad range of evaluation criteria for many types of commercial and government-only IT security products. CC EAL 7+ is the highest assurance level the Common Criteria has to offer.
